Understanding predator control

Pest control is crucial to protecting the fragile Shotover wetlands ecosystem. Pests like stoats and possums harm native species through predation, competition for food, and habitat destruction—killing birds, eating eggs, and damaging plants.

We monitor pest activity using tracking tunnels (footprint cards), and trail cameras, helping us build baseline data and track population changes over time. Success is measured by fewer pest sightings and improved native wildlife numbers. While pest control may seem harsh, it’s necessary to restore ecological balance and ensure our native species can thrive.
